Dear GCPL Summer Reading Club (SRC) Students and Parents:

Thank you for having your child participate in the Greater Canonsburg Public Library’s Summer Reading Club Program. The staff of GCPL involved in SRC had more fun than a barrel of moths – or is that a litter of ladybugs – a bevy of bees - a flock of fleas!?

We did not know until meeting with the students over the last eight weeks just how much fun the children would have studying insects.  Please remember to quiz them when in the winter months they are “stuck” inside, what makes an insect an insect (come on guys … two antennae, three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), six legs (sorry to leave out those spiders, centipedes and millipedes!) and an exoskeleton.

It is also very important for us to thank the two Principals of Canon-McMillan’s Intermediate Schools: Mr. Tim Theodore at North Strabane Intermediate and Mr. Scott Chambers at Cecil Intermediate for so graciously hosting GCPL SRC and for even opening up the absolutely fabulous Computer Lab in each facility.  The SRC students watched many on-line National Geographic videos on insects, and a few auxiliary subjects like bats, octopus and Prehistoric Cave Art.  Of course there were a few minutes left at each Computer Day for a few games of “Sink the Water Beetle”, etc.

To the students who were able to accompany us on the Friday Field Trips, you gave us so many priceless memories.  You asked the best questions and were awesome at finding invertebrates and crawfish at the Regional Environmental Education Center (REEC); you checked your fears and used all your courage to feed the birds at the National Aviary live insects and worms!; walked what felt like one million miles (the same number as the number of insects you would find in a football field) through Oglebay’s Good Zoo and Nature Center!  And we what troopers you all were with all the walking we did on the last Friday Field Trip to the Woodlands Zoo and the caves at Laurel Caverns.

We also enjoyed very much accompanying those of you who were able to watch the three children’s plays at Little Lake Theater.  You made us “oh so proud” when you were compared to the other local library SRC that was there as the “better behaved SRC!”  (We knew that anyway!)  Before this summer who knew a musical “If Your Give a Pig a Pancake” could be so much fun?

It was our goal to make SRC educational and also fun for you!  What did you do?  You made it a very educational and a fun summer for us too  Once school begins you will be even busier than you were this summer.  Make sure you come into the Library and visit (and check out some good books!)

We are planning on offering once a month BUGGY PROGRAMS in the fall to keep the bug fun ongoing.  Keep in touch with us and watch for upcoming events on the web site.  Don’t forget to come into GCPL and take an Accelerated Reading (AR) test.  Those of you who are such natural actors (that would be each of you!) need to keep your eyes open for when GCPL participates for the third year the Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Shakespeare Monologue.

BEE sure to enjoy the last weeks of the summer!  During the winter months we will keep our hearts warm remembering you as you acted out being bats and mosquitoes (echolocation), relentlessly stayed with the bug algorithm puzzles until you solved them, and how brave you were when you were “hit” by the birds at the National Aviary.  Thanks again for being a very memorable part of our summer.
