Suite Francaise
by Irene Nemirovsky

Originally planned as a five-part novel patterned after Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Suite Francaise was published sixty-four years after Irene Nemirovsky death at Auschwitz.  Her daughters had in their possession notebooks filled with her tiny handwriting but were too heartbroken to open what they believed to be her journals.
When the decision was made to donate the notebooks to a museum, the true contents were discovered in the world is richer for it.
This story of the exodus of Paris and the Nazi invasion of France gives the reader unparalleled insight into these events. And how could it not?  Nemirovsky was living what she wrote.

Just as compelling as the novel she created is what follows - her notes about the work and the correspondence of family and friends trying to gain knowledge of her whereabouts and well-being. The reader cannot help but feel Nemirovsky’s presence as her story is told, especially when one notices that the end papers are copies of her handwritten notes.
